  Availability for Thesis Projects

Experimental thesis on Natural Product Chemistry are available. Three main area of research are available for thesis, namely extraction, isolation and characterization of bioactive natural products; development of analytical methods for the natural product determination in complex matrix; metabolomic-based studies on natural products.

Research

  Scientific Activities

The research activity of the Natural Product Lab deal with the chemistry of natural products mainly plant derived bioactive constituents. Research projects can be grouped in three different area, extraction, isolation and characterization of bioactive natural products, bioavailability and in vivo effects of natural products and nutraceuticals, metabolomics-based studies on natural products. In the first area innovative extraction protocols have been evaluated by Supercritical CO2, in cooperation with other research groups, furthermore approaches using enzymes, NADES are actually studied. Structure elucidation of newly isolated natural product is obtained by accurate measurements by 1D and 2D NMR techniques as well as HR-MS and MS/MS approaches using different Mass spectrometer analyzer (Ion trap, TQD, Q-TOF). In the last years some projects were dedicated to the study of the bioavailability and in vivo effects of natural mixtures and isolated natural products.

Research group has international relationships with Brno Pharmaceutical and Veterinary Faculty (Czech Republic), Ankara University (Turkey), Thribuvan University (Nepal), Universidad Estatal Amazonica. Several cooperation with Italian groups have been established especially with Trieste, Camerino, La Sapienza (Roma), Universities.

  Technical expertise

Monodimensional and bidimensional NMR (including COSY, TOCSY, NOESY, ROESY, HSQC, HSQC-DEPT, HMBC, HMQC, diffusion experiments and DOSY, quantitative H-NMR on mixtures and biofluids).

GC-MS (ion trap) methods development for essential oils, and for metabolites on biofluids, using both EI and CI ionization.

HPLC-MS by Ion trap, for qualitative and quantitative purpouses, mainly on natural products of herbal origins. HPLC-MS triple quadrupole for quantitative analysis of selected compounds on complex mixtures and on biofluids.

UPLC-Q-TOF analysis for metabolomics purpouses on herbal extracts

HPLC-MS, UPLC-MS on urines and biofluids for determination of bioactive natural products.
