Study of traditional medicinal plants and isolated constituents regarding their actions on cardiovascular system and aging-related diseases. Furthermore, pharmacological transduction mechanisms are always evaluated with interest.
Research
Scientific Activities
The research experience is mainly focused on medicinal plants of traditional use and isolated phytoconstituents, mainly on cardiovascular system. The scientific activity is documented by more than 65 manuscripts published extensively in international journals for the most part, 65 proceedings and more than 120 participations in national and international conferences. The publishing activity also consists of 10 chapters about topics of Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology and Toxicology.
The main lines of research are:
1. Study of plants traditionally used for hypoglycaemic, hypotensive, antiviral and healing properties (i.e. Croton spp., Casimiroa spp., Pterodon emarginatus, etc.).
2. In vitro determination of the antioxidant capacity of plant extracts and natural compounds.
3. In vitro cellular uptake assessment of natural compounds as a prediction tool of in vivo bioavailability.
Technical expertise
DPPH assay; ORAC assay; Total Phenolic Content (TPC) assay; Total flavonoids Content (TFC) assay; Phytochemical screening by HPLC-DAD; Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVEC) protocols; human ox-LDL protocols; cellular uptake protocols; Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs) determination.
