  Scientific Activities

Research activity

Since many years involved in the studies on mechanistic aspects of furocoumarins and analogues in PUVA therapy and on the  photoinduced drug toxicity and photostability. Recently, she has focused her research on the transformation of illicit drugs by solar light and selected UVA-UVB irradiation, and the products of photodecomposition of CNS drugs for the search of new markers of drug toxicity in hair and new pollutants in waters.
In particular: a) study of the UVA photointeractions of some phototherapeutic agents with biological substrates (DNA, proteins and lipids); b) in vitro drug phototoxicity studies : mechanisms of the photosensitizing reactions induced by drugs under UVA-UVB light and solar light; c) photostability studies: photolysis of medicines and additives in vitro (in solution and in pharmaceutical formulation) and of of illicit drugs, characterization of the photoproducts formed under irradiation, their role in the photosensitizing activity and loss of therapeutic activity and new markers of drug abuse.

  Technical expertise

The experimental activity is focused on photobiology and photochemistry issues: the photoreactivity of drugs/illicit drugs and biological active compounds under selected wavelengths (UVA and UVB lamps) and solar light (sunlight simulator) in different matrices (solid, organic, aqueous solution, formulations) isolation and characterization of photoadducts with target substrates (salmon testes, calf thymus,  plasmid- DNA, lipids, proteins, amino acids) and photodegradation products (UV-Vis spectroscopy, LD-linear dichroism (DNA intercalating agents),  Solid-Liquid chromatography (TLC, HPLC, UPLC), MS spectrometry (HRMS), DNA electrophoresis, studies of phototoxic and photo-antiproliferative activity of compounds on human normal or tumour cell cultures.
